ChatGPT rolls out 'Shop with AI' — cross-border stores face citation readiness test

OpenAI began rolling out "Shop with AI," a comparison-shopping interface within ChatGPT, in late July 2026. The feature prompts users with "Compare these products" when multi-merchant intent is detected — cross-category queries like "waterproof hiking boots under $200 shipped to Germany" or "best budget espresso machines with warranty."

How citation works in Shop with AI

The shopping layer draws citations exclusively from structured data (JSON-LD). Pages with complete Product, Offer, and ShippingDetails schema are eligible for inline citations. Pages with missing or incomplete schema are excluded entirely — even if they rank well on Google.

The cross-border readiness gap

Visora's July audit cohort (n=240 cross-border merchants) found that 63% of non-English product pages lacked Offer schema in the correct locale currency. Another 41% had ShippingDetails schema pointing to wrong regions. These stores will appear in "Shop with AI" — but as faceless results with no pricing or delivery data.

Visora angle

Run a free scan at geovisora.com/audit to check if your hero SKUs carry the Offer, ShippingDetails, and Product JSON-LD that "Shop with AI" requires. The difference between being cited and being invisible starts with a three-minute audit.
