Anthropic expands Claude shopping guidance for product research prompts

Anthropic's January 2026 platform notes describe expanded shopping guidance inside Claude for product research prompts—particularly "compare options" and "what should I buy for [use case]" flows. The update does not introduce checkout inside Claude; instead it tightens how the model selects and cites merchant URLs when recommending products.

What changed

  • Stronger preference for pages with explicit specs, warranties, and return policies in HTML
  • Reduced reliance on affiliate roundup sites when primary merchant PDPs answer the prompt
  • Clearer source attribution blocks in answers, making citation visibility easier to audit manually

Merchant observations (agency notes, Jan 2026)

  • Brands with FAQPage schema saw faster inclusion after content refreshes
  • Pages hiding price or availability behind scripts underperformed in cited sets
  • Cross-border stores without localized shipping FAQs lost share in EU prompts

Comparison with other AI surfaces

Claude shopping guidance appears more conservative on medical and supplement claims—regulated copy without citations rarely surfaces. General commerce categories behave similarly to Perplexity-style source lists, with emphasis on direct merchant facts.

Visora angle

Add Claude-oriented prompt templates to Visora Monitor: track five comparison prompts per category weekly. Pair with audit fixes for spec tables and return policy markup before expecting citation gains.
