Assistants now answer return questions before the click, and cited stores are winning

Across Q3 2026 conversation panels we reviewed this week, one question type moved earlier than any other: what happens after the purchase. Return windows, who pays return shipping, and warranty paths now appear before the shopper has chosen a store, not after. Assistants are being asked to pre-qualify policies the way they used to pre-qualify specs.

What the panel shows

  • Return and warranty questions rose 34% QoQ in shopping-intent prompts, outpacing price questions for the first time in our tracking
  • Cross-border return cost appeared in the majority of EU and APAC sessions involving a non-domestic store
  • Stores with structured FAQ terms were cited 2.4x more often in those answers than stores with prose-only policies
  • Localized return terms lifted citation share in DE and JA prompts even when the English page ranked higher on Google

Why it is happening

Buyers use assistants to de-risk, not just to compare. Once specs are settled, the remaining uncertainty is cost of being wrong, and that is a terms question. Assistants respond by looking for a page they can quote in one clean sentence. Legalistic policy pages, or conditions buried in a footnote, produce no quotable sentence, so the assistant routes the answer to whichever store states its terms plainly. The cited store gets the click; the others are described through the cited store's terms.

The cross-border angle

Return mechanics are where global merchants lose the most ground. "Returns accepted" without who-pays-duties, whether original shipping is refunded, and where to send the item back leaves an assistant nothing to work with. Localized, structured terms are doing more for citation share than any technical fix we have measured this quarter.

Visora angle

Terms are a content and schema problem, not a logistics one, which means they are fixable this week. A free scan at geovisora.com/audit shows which of your pages an assistant can actually quote and ranks the gaps by whether they touch a decision point. If return and warranty pages are already drafted but unquotable, that is usually a fast win before peak season.
