GEOSEOStrategy

GEO vs SEO: what actually transfers (and what gets left behind)

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and classic Search Engine Optimization (SEO) are often framed as rivals. They are not. They share the same foundation: crawlable pages, clean technical health, entities, and content, but they are scored by different systems for different payoffs. If you are a merchant deciding where to spend the next quarter, the useful question is not "SEO or GEO" but "what transfers, what does not, and what to stop doing."

The shared plumbing

Both depend on the basics: fast pages, valid HTML, working internal links, accurate canonical tags, and structured data. If Googlebot cannot render your product page, neither traditional rankings nor AI citations will save you. Core Web Vitals, sitemaps, and hreflang still matter. Treat these as table stakes, not as a GEO strategy.

What SEO optimizes that GEO does not reward the same way

Traditional SEO chases ranking position for a query. A lot of the craft is about authority, link equity, and matching search intent at the keyword level. That still drives traffic to blue links. But ranking number one does not guarantee a citation inside an AI Overview or a ChatGPT answer. The model selects evidence, not positions. A page can rank well and still be invisible in synthesized answers if its content is not structured as citable chunks.

What GEO optimizes that SEO underweights

GEO targets retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) paths. It asks: when a model fetches chunks at query time, will it find a sentence it can quote accurately? That means answer-ready paragraphs, FAQ-style Q and A, consistent entity naming, and facts available in both HTML and JSON-LD. For commerce, it means price, availability, dimensions, warranty, and shipping in machine-readable form, not buried in a hero image.

What to stop doing

Stop writing category copy that only a human reading top-to-bottom would understand. Stop letting specs live only in PDFs or images. Stop assuming a high domain authority protects you. AI systems cite the best paragraph available, even from a smaller site, when it is the most citable.

Where to invest first

Run a baseline on 10 hero SKUs: answerability, schema completeness, entity coherence, locale signals. Fix stale prices. Add five buyer questions per product page. Track citations by engine and locale monthly. Expand to content clusters only after the factual layer is solid.

Teams using Visora usually start with the /audit workflow to score these four layers and export a prioritized fix list before scaling monitoring. GEO is not a rewrite of SEO. It is the part of SEO that AI search actually reads.

Put this into practice

Audit your PDP or category page with Visora, then fix schema and FAQ gaps that block AI citations.
